BUSH TRANSFERS MT. SOLEDAD TO FED GOVT

As long as there's an atheist out there with a lawyer, and there's plenty of them in California, the fight over the cross at Mount Soledad will continue. But, for now, I think the cross will be standing right where it is for years to come. From the NYT:

"LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 — President Bush on Monday signed a law transferring a 29-foot-tall Latin cross high on a hill in San Diego to the federal government, stepping into a long-running dispute over the separation of church and state.

Mr. Bush, in the latest unusual action designed to save the Mount Soledad cross, in the La Jolla district, sided firmly with cross supporters who acknowledge that it is the pre-eminent symbol of Christianity but contend that it forms part of a secular war memorial."

You have to thank the president, along with the locals, for doing the right thing and doing it so quickly.

This cross is a tribute to our war dead and should forever stand. With this news, they can rest easy knowing their sacrafice for this nation will always be honored and respected.

Hat Tip: STOP THE ACLU
